I first met Karen when I was 16, when I went to study with the Orford Quartet at the Kelso Music Centre. She was a beautiful, vivacious woman, and generous in every way. As I recall, it was she who brought in a teacher to work with us on relaxation technique, something I’d not done before, and had us all sprawled out on the floor working on body awareness and mindfulness. What a vibrant, kind, and warm presence she was to all of us there. She was like a cheerleader for the camp, and helped to make the experience of that quartet program so memorable. I reconnected with Karen and Andy when I joined the faculty at Kneisel Hall in 1996. It was so wonderful to see them both, and a true honor to now be Andy’s colleague. Karen played that same role with the students at Kneisel that she had done so many years before at the Kelso program. Her energy and enthusiasm were infectious, and she was greatly beloved by everyone. I feel very fortunate to have known her, and to have been graced by her presence.
